The Main Ways Care Is Paid For

Most supported living and residential care is funded in one of three ways: through the local authority, through NHS Continuing Healthcare or privately. Many people are unsure which applies to them, and that is completely normal. Our team can help you understand your situation and guide you to the right starting point.

The Three Main Funding Routes

Local Authority Funding

People with eligible care needs may be eligible for funding from their local authority, subject to assessment. A financial means test also applies and will determine the level of contribution required.

  • Eligibility is subject to a care needs assessment
  • A financial assessment determines any personal contribution
  • Direct payments may be available to manage your own care

NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC)

NHS Continuing Healthcare is available to those with a primary health need. People may be eligible for fully funded NHS care, subject to assessment by the NHS Integrated Care Board.

  • Covers the full cost of care for those who qualify
  • Eligibility is subject to a multi-disciplinary assessment
  • Not means-tested — based on health needs alone

Private Funding

Some individuals and families choose to fund care privately, either because they do not meet the threshold for funded support or because they prefer to arrange care independently.

  • Full flexibility over care arrangements and provider choice
  • Can be combined with local authority or NHS contributions
  • Financial advice services can help plan for care costs
